Its been a long and sometimes painful ride. After 5 years, I have decided to leave deviantART. My reasons are myriad.
CULTURE
The culture on deviantART today is not the same as it once was. Though admin have tried to restore some sense of pride in the community, most notably through the Critique function, the site as a whole has continued its downward spiral in to anime fangirlism and heated debates over the exact application of deviantART as another Photobucket.
While there are still many fantastic artists on this site, and many fantastic people that are unrecognised and yet deserve all the recognition they can garner, those people are increasingly far and few between.
MONEY
I'm a dA subscriber and have been for years. I can no longer justify the expenditure on a website that I now contribute to infrequently.
WRITING
I'm not the narcissistic low-twenty-something person that I once was. I need to write now for -my sake-, not for the sake of a vague and frankly ignoble action of posting something online and hoping someone will read it and notice me above all the other (far more deserving) artists on the website.
The Literature community here is fantastic, tight-knit and intelligent - but unfortunately it has been let down by the administration itself. Writing takes as much effort as painting or drawing or sculpting and, frequently, involves a lot more personal opinion about...well, anything. It is disheartening that, with a community as vibrant and alive as the writing community on dA, that the administration couldn't do more to support it. Frequent request from myself and other writers regarding better categorisation, the disabling (through clever coding) of the ability to download text (including copy/paste), and better support for writers through more powerful integration of writing and editing tools, have all been denied or responded to with "We'll look in to it" without so much as a second glance.
For these reasons, I consign my subscription to the depths.
For those of you kind enough to follow, fave, comment and critique my works, I thank you with the full capabilities at my disposal. I have met some truly wonderful people through dA - both online and in actuality - that have inspired me to better things and that, more than anything, is the thing I am most thankful for.
Peace and progress, my friends. And may your careers shine forth brightly, no matter your field.
