Delays and Poetry stuff

Journal Entry: Tue Nov 24, 2009, 2:15 AM

Yes, Sixes and Sevens has been delayed again, and yes, I know the people following it probably hate me right now.

I'm in the middle of writing a poem, trying to fit the syllables per line so that it reads the same way Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" read - actually, the theme itself is similar, though I'm probably hideously bastardising the format. The poem is being written for WrA's weekly Story Circle on Horde-side, and I want it ready to share this weekend. Obviously it is thusly WoW based, which is where the bastardisation comes in. But its for a good cause. I can use this poem, no matter how bad it turns out, to improve my skills. Which just goes to show, for any artist, there are opportunities everywhere for self-improvement.

Should be a new Sixes and Sevens in the next 48 hours, for those of you that care, so sit tight. There should be a new deviation on *Steamstalk soonish as well, obviously I have to work out the kinks in the writing and then the page has to be drawn up, and so on and so forth.

I'm enjoying this challenge, actually, of diverting my attention from one major work to another - especially when the forms are completely different. Sixes and Sevens allows me to be a bit more flamboyant with my writing, because I have the space to do whatever I want, be it descriptive sequences or full conversations. The work for *Steamstalk is much tighter, though - because I do have limited space, I have to make every word count, and that presents a unique challenge to someone who, lets face it, is used to waffling on a bit.

So really, this is a great writing exercise for me, and I can see my writing improving as a result, which can only be a good thing. I'll keep you posted on things I learn as this progresses.

Good news, everyone!

I would like to proudly announce the birth of a new account, shared between *Feitan and myself, specifically for that pesky new side-project we have been talking about for weeks now. So please, have a click on the icon below occasionally, we'll update it with information and deviations as they become available!

Description in prose.

I'm fast coming to the realisation that description does not necessarily rely on heavy use of adjectives, or analogies, or indeed walls of text. Yes, these ways of writing have a purpose, and if done correctly they can even describe fluently. But you shouldn't just use these three methods exclusively.

The biggest realisation that has struck me of late is that characters can describe events just as well, and sometimes far better than adjectives, for example, could ever do. The reason I think is especially apparent in character interactions. When a character speaks to another character you invariably want that interaction to be believable (or else, you won't have written a good story), and so it is necessary for characters to express their emotions as they speak, without resorting to "I'm really angry!" or 'Christine was so angry.'

Instead, a character saying something like, "I wish you'd just fucking listen to me, Brian!" indicates so many things! Not only does the exclamation mark indicate the this is a powerful statement, the italics indicate stress and tone, the use of cursing indicates anger, while the rest of the statement indicates indignation and frustration, all in one little sentence in which one character interacts with another.

This may be elementary stuff to other writers but we all learn things at our own pace. I imagine screen and stage writers would understand this form of description intimately, and radio writers would understand it in a unique manner.

What interests me with this, specifically, is what a one-sided conversation would be like from a descriptive point of view. Not a monologue - I simply mean writing a conversation and leaving the other character's speech hidden. You would be able to get across emotion well enough, I think. But what about setting? Action? These are challenges which both intrigue and fascinate me, and thus, the experimentation has begun.

EDIT Also, please take note of the following!

1) Sixes and Sevens Part 1 Chapter 1 is now live.
2) The project that Feitan and I are working on is taking root and work has officially started. Expect to see something soon...
