I'm fast coming to the realisation that description does not necessarily rely on heavy use of adjectives, or analogies, or indeed walls of text. Yes, these ways of writing have a purpose, and if done correctly they can even describe fluently. But you shouldn't just use these three methods exclusively.
The biggest realisation that has struck me of late is that characters can describe events just as well, and sometimes far better than adjectives, for example, could ever do. The reason I think is especially apparent in character interactions. When a character speaks to another character you invariably want that interaction to be believable (or else, you won't have written a good story), and so it is necessary for characters to express their emotions as they speak, without resorting to "I'm really angry!" or 'Christine was so angry.'
Instead, a character saying something like, "I wish you'd just
fucking listen to me, Brian!" indicates so many things! Not only does the exclamation mark indicate the this is a powerful statement, the italics indicate stress and tone, the use of cursing indicates anger, while the rest of the statement indicates indignation and frustration, all in one little sentence in which one character interacts with another.
This may be elementary stuff to other writers but we all learn things at our own pace. I imagine screen and stage writers would understand this form of description intimately, and radio writers would understand it in a unique manner.
What interests me with this, specifically, is what a one-sided conversation would be like from a descriptive point of view. Not a monologue - I simply mean writing a conversation and leaving the other character's speech hidden. You would be able to get across emotion well enough, I think. But what about setting? Action? These are challenges which both intrigue and fascinate me, and thus, the experimentation has begun.
EDIT Also, please take note of the following!
1) Sixes and Sevens Part 1 Chapter 1 is now live.
2) The project that Feitan and I are working on is taking root and work has officially started. Expect to see something soon...
